I Can’t Function Without My Family: Roger Federer’s Form At Wimbledon 2021 Questioned

Roger Federer has opened up on his experience of moving from one tournament bubble into another without his loved ones by his side.
Appearing on a live show on Tennis Channel, also featuring nine-time Wimbledon champion Martina Navratilova, Federer said it isn’t fun staying cooped up in a bubble and not being with his family.

The Swiss added that all he can do now is to check in on wife Mirka and kids thrice a day and ask if everything is okay back home.

Asked how he has been coping with the bubble life, Federer said, “Well terrible. Quite honestly, I am not seeing them, I am not with them. And that in itself is not good. I speak to them three times a day, checking with Mirka if everything’s okay at home but there’s only so much I can do.”

However, he added that he can’t thank his wife enough for having his back and managing things at home while he is out competing for titles.

“She is great. She has always got my back and she’s a very strong lady. She’s the best. So I can’t complain from the standpoint but it’s no fun not having them here,” the eight-time Wimbledon champion said.

Though Federer didn’t have his family by his side at Roland-Garros, they were with him at Halle, his traditional grass court tune-up event ahead of Wimbledon.

However, his stay in the German city was cut short this year as, coming into the tournament in the quest of his 11th career title, the Swiss was ousted in the round-of-16 by Canadian tennis star Felix Auger-Aliassime.

He later confirmed that he would travel to Wimbledon without his wife and children as he didn’t want them to go through the rigors of a tournament bubble.

Federer said to a question from a member of the Swiss media contingent on what he plans to do on his off-day after reaching the fourth round at All England for the 18th time, he replied that he would take a tour of the lobby before walking back to his hotel room.
