Margaret Court on Serena Williams Chasing Her Record of 24 Grand Slams

Margaret Court, winner of 24 Grand Slam singles titles and 64 overall Grand Slam doubles titles, says if Serena Williams beats her record, then she deserves the record for most Grand Slam singles titles won by an individual player.

In an interview to The Courier, Court says, “It’s close with the singles, I don’t think anybody will ever beat the overall (64 grand slams). I think if she (Williams) wins and she beats it, she deserves it because I’ve held it for close to 50 years.” Williams won her 23rd Grand Slam singles title in Australia two years ago, when she was seven weeks pregnant.

She returned to the tour last year after giving birth and came up just short in winning her 24th Grand Slam singles title, when she was beaten in the finals at Wimbledon and the US Open. The 37-year-old Williams will be hoping to tie Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles when she plays the Australian Open later this month.

In the same interview, Court also says that she stands by her views on same-sex marriage. “I just said what the Bible said and I think a lot of people didn’t like it. Really that’s all I was saying and you got blasted because of it and bullied because of it.

In my heart, I have nothing against the person, we have them in our own church, but that’s how I think it was portrayed. I think I had broad shoulders in tennis and you can carry it through. I’d still say the same thing again today.”
