Mouratoglou on Serena Williams’ chances of retirement after Wimbledon

Published

It was one of the worst surprises tennis fans had in this Wimbledon 2021, many were impressed by the fall of the legendary champion Serena Williams, collapsed to the ground after a few games of the first round of the Championships and forced to retire from the tournament in tears.

It was on the result of 3-3 against the Belarusian Sasnovich and the fall of Serena immediately made fear the worst, the hearts of the fans broke and everyone thought painfully if this could be the last act of the American tennis career.

As Serena left the court the whole crowd stood up to applaud and in the press conference, together with her husband, her mother and her coach Patrick Mouratoglou Serena had discussed this situation. However, when among the questions they pointed out that this Wimbledon even saw Serena among the favorites, she was unable to react and thus left the conference.

Mouratoglou’s words about Serena Williams
Serena Williams well-known coach – one of the most famous in the tennis scene – Patrick Mouratoglou has discussed the possibility that this may have been Serena Williams’ last Wimbledon.

In an extraordinary career studded with 23 Grand Slam titles, Serena will be remembered as one of the greatest (if not the greatest) tennis players in history. Mouratoglou said: “I don’t think this is Serena Williams’ last Wimbledon but I can’t afford to answer for her.

What she has done in her career is incredible, but I don’t know if this is her last Wimbledon, it’s a situation that depends on many things. Obviously we are all aware that Serena is about to end her career.” On Serena Williams’ withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics and about the future, Patrick said: “I consider you have the same chances at both the US Open and Wimbledon, I think you can have a say in the United States too.”

Williams has won 73 WTA singles titles: 23 of these are Grand Slam events, making her the second player ever to have won more Majors in this specialty behind only Margaret Smith Court, with 24. She has completed the Calendar Grand Slam, which consists in winning four consecutive Slams not in the same calendar year, twice (in the two years 2002-2003 and 2014-2015).

She also boasts five year-end Master Cups and 19 Premier category tournaments, as well as 21 Tier I and Tier II titles and a gold medal won at the London Olympics in 2012. against Maria Sharapova. Not only in singles Williams can boast numerous victories, but also in women’s doubles and mixed doubles,

where there are another 16 Grand Slam tournaments: 14 won with her older sister Venus and two in mixed doubles, both obtained with Maks Mirny in the 1998.

To these successes must be added another three gold medals at the Olympics, all won together with Venus, a Federation Cup and two Hopman Cups. With a prize pool of over $ 90 million, she is the highest earning player in the history of the sport.
