Novak Djokovic ‘feels disrespected’ in Wimbledon final after confronting crowd

Novak Djokovic was not the crowd favourite in the Wimbledon final against Matteo Berrettini. Boris Becker has revealed that Novak Djokovic “feels disrespected” by the Wimbledon crowd after seeing the world No 1 try and get a rise on Centre Court.

Matteo Berrettini upset the script on Centre Court on Sunday when he took the opening set against Djokovic. And it was quickly apparent that Berrettini’s early success was to the delight of the crowd. But the Serbian tennis superstar was calm and composed before levelling the match in the second set.

It was noticeable that there wasn’t as loud a cheer for Djokovic’s set than there was for Berrettini’s. The third was going to be hugely important to decide which way the match went and Djokovic got the early break once again.

Berrettini wasn’t going away lightly though and with Djokovic on serve leading 3-2, the Italian had a few break point opportunities to come back into the set. Djokovic though fought back to hold an important service game and he immediately turned to the crowd to raise the noise. “This is going to offend Novak Djokovic personally,” Andrew Castle said.

“There are a lot of people in here supporting Djokovic, you just can’t hear them.” Becker, who was on co-commentary on BBC and previously worked with Djokovic as a coach, then noted how the 34-year-old isn’t comfortable with the lack of support he receives.

Becker said: “Yeah he doesn’t like it. He feels disrespected.” Castle, who reached the mixed doubles final at the 1987 Australian Open, also took note of Djokovic’s demeanour after holding serve. He said:

“That’s a very strong hold and that’s full of character, ‘who do you think you’re dealing with here? The best player of all time.

“‘I come here and win five times and you still don’t love me? How dare you!'” “That’s exactly the conversation he’s having.” “This is nice. It’s good to interact. Especially when you’ve just saved break points.”
