Patrick Mahomes And Brett Veach Address Andy Reid’s Retirement Rumors

Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach and quarterback Patrick Mahomes have shot down any suggestion that Andy Reid pondered retiring before or after Sunday’s Super Bowl LVII triumph.

“As long as Andy Reid is coaching us, we’re always going to have a chance,” Mahomes said Monday at the traditional morning-after Super Bowl MVP news conference, in Phoenix. “So I’ll keep the big guy around for a couple more years, at least, and we’ll try to win this game as many times as possible”.

“I would like to think that other than his wife, Tammy, I don’t think anybody talks to coach [as much] or knows coach as well as I do,” Veach said during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” as shared by Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. “And [retiring] has never come up. So, I would be shocked if he takes time away and comes up with a decision that is something other than coaching football”.

“But for him now to kind of be able to have that time to decompress and go spend time with his family, recharge the batteries, start working on some new concepts and ideas and let me and my staff go to work — I think that it’s re-energized him,” Veach explained.

Reid took a few questions before Mahomes on Monday. The first was about how long he’ll be coaching the Chiefs. Reid has addressed question after question about that after the game by declaring, or strongly indicating, that he’s not going anywhere.

“I know I got asked that a lot, and I wasn’t really expecting to. But I hadn’t put much thought into all that,” Reid said. “I’m enjoying what I’m doing, and I’ve got this guy over here (Mahomes) that is a pretty good player. So we’re doing OK.”

Reid is fifth all-time among NFL coaches with 247 regular-season victories, according to Pro-Football-Reference. Since the start of the 2019 season, he has led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl appearances and two championships.
