Patrick Mahomes Reveals Plans After Retirement

On Tuesday lunchtime, Mahomes talked with a room full of reporters from Super Bowl LVII media week and addressed questions about his own ankle injury, and the legacy he’s establishing with another Super Bowl berth. He did, however, have the opportunity to provide a possible peek into the future.

Patrick Mahomes invested into the ownership groups of two of the city’s big sports organizations, the Major League Baseball’s Royals and Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City, because he has always wanted to invest in Kansas City and some of its iconic institutions.

Mahomes is 27 years old, so he has a long way to go before he joins Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter, and others as an outstanding player who subsequently controls a major sports team. Mahomes, who is under contract through 2031, will remain in his current position for at least another decade, if not longer.

It’s not simply a costly pastime for Mahomes. For the time being, he is satisfied with his current position as quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, but Mahomes sees these investments as internships in preparation for his future career.

“This is just a start, honestly,” Mahomes said of his interest in pro sports ownership. “I want to invest in the Kansas City community, and I want to have something that my kids will be able to have once I’m gone. You buy into these great franchises that love Kansas City in the hope that one day you could become one of the majority owners of something. I don’t know what that is yet, but that’s the hope one day.”

“I don’t think you’ve seen a football player do that yet, but it’s definitely something I’ve looked into. It’s a long process, and getting to learn from some of these people that run great franchises now is definitely going to help me in the long run.”
