Roger Federer: ‘I need the fire, the excitement, the whole rollercoaster’

He has a reputation for cool, but the athlete says tennis is pure emotion – from his moody youth to weepy grand slam finals. Can he win another Wimbledon?

He loved tennis from a young age, always playing against a wall at home, at a club with his Swiss father, a chemical engineer, and South African mother (Federer holds dual nationality). But when he started to compete, aged eight, he would get frustrated, berating himself, telling himself he was rubbish.

Could he have become a champion if he’d stayed that way?

“Yes, Federer says, but not to the extent I am today. I might have won a few slams, big tournaments, stayed in the top 10 for a long time, who knows.” He says this as if most of us were capable of a few grand slams. He grins. “Well, I’ve won 20, so maybe I could have won a few being a little bit cuckoo, but I’m not sure. You have to be mentally tough, physically strong, consistent, and I wasn’t. So I’m really proud I managed to turn it around.”

Federer has played in 65 successive slams, a testament to his hunger and his fitness. Then there is his record. Or records. Federer’s grand slam total makes him the greatest male tennis player ever. His closest rivals, Pete Sampras and Rafa Nadal, has 14 and 20 each.

February 2020, Federer underwent arthroscopic surgery for a right knee injury and subsequently withdrew from Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami and the French Open to give time for his knee to recover. Thirteen months after his run to the 2020 Australian Open semi-finals, Roger Federer returned to a professional tennis court on Saturday for his first practice session at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open.

The three-time Doha champion spent an hour practising on Court 1 at the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex with the man he could meet in his comeback match: Daniel Evans. Despite the cold and windy conditions, the pair were in good spirits ahead of the tournament, which will take place from 8-13 March.

The Swiss Maestro shows so much energy while training that he says he needs the fire, the excitement and the whole rollercoaster!
