Venus Williams talks about the importance of beads

At the premiere of ‘King Richard, Venus wore a gorgeous silver dress. Along with the dress, the spotlight was on the iconic silver beads that she wore. Just after the premiere, Venus shared a picture on her Instagram, highlighting the historic and cultural importance of beads.

In the Instagram post shared, Venus wrote, “When @serenawilliams and I wore our iconic beads, we didn’t wear them to be different, we wore them because they were a part of our heritage. Beads are a typical style for African American children. Of course, they are worn by adults too for decoration in African American culture but have deep roots in African history.”

Speaking on beads and braids, she further added, “Beads and braids could be a symbol of your tribe, rank, and status, age, religion, and much more. They were and still remain in some areas of cultural significance to both men and women.”

Venus was unaware of the importance of beads in her childhood

As Venus shared the origin and importance of beads, she was unaware of their significance back in her childhood. However, she sees this as an opportunity to share the cultural heritage with the world, and take pride in it. She further quoted, “Wearing a beaded style for the premiere was a representation of my roots. The film is a true origins story.”

The look of the Williams sisters from their childhood is now iconic, and it was truly special to see Venus talk about its importance to her. We wish her all the best for the upcoming release of King Richard.
