MLB Insider Suggests New Strategy For Red Sox At Trade Deadline

The unofficial second half of the Boston Red Sox season is about to begin, and the trade deadline is rapidly approaching.

What would seem to be in the best interest of the Red Sox in terms of deadline approach has quickly shifted following a hot stretch heading into the All-Star break.

Boston is now just two games back of the final postseason spot in the American League with 71 games left in the 2023 season. It’s very conceivable that this could be a playoff team, but for that to become true they would likely have to add more pieces at the deadline.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal offered his opinion on what would be most beneficial for Boston by the end of this month.

“President of baseball operations Chaim Bloom, after executing a faulty buy-sell strategy at last year’s deadline, will be under particular scrutiny,” says Rosenthal. “Left-hander Paxton and center fielder Adam Duvall would be attractive trade candidates. But modest adds might be a better way to go.”

With shortstop Trevor Story’s rehab assignment set to begin soon, and starter Chris Sale hopefully following soon after, it seems most likely that the Red Sox will only need to make modest adds as Rosenthal suggests.

Either way, all eyes will be on Chaim Bloom’s approach at this very important trade deadline as the present and future success of the Red Sox is on the line.

Personally, I would like to see them add another starter to specifically bridge the gap to the return of Garrett Whitlock and Tanner Houck to the rotation.

Also, dealing Adam Duvall and allowing Jarren Duran to be the everyday center fielder seems to make too much sense at this point.

If the Red Sox stay hot in their six-game road trip coming up, it would be hard to imagine any other approach at the deadline than adding on pieces. Here’s to hoping that ends up being the case.
