Red Sox Reportedly Interested In Replacing Chaim Bloom With Top Exec
The Boston Red Sox are on pace to miss the postseason by a hefty margin for the second season in a row — largely due to roster holes that everyone was well aware of entering the 2023 campaign.
For that reason, Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom has been under serious scrutiny — though anyone in his position has/will receive hate from the Boston media and fanbase.
In a market as historically successful as Boston, every losing season is followed by hot-seat rumors. Now the national media is getting involved.
“Former Milwaukee Brewers general manager David Stearns still is the heavy favorite to become the new president of baseball operations (for the New York Mets), although rumors persist that the Boston Red Sox could be in the mix,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote Sunday.
New York Post’s Jon Heyman wrote a similar statement regarding the potential of Stearns replacing Bloom back in May.
Bloom’s record has not been great but it’s not fair to use wins as a metric for his success — at least this early on.
The former Tampa Bay Rays executive was brought in prior to the 2020 season to rebuild the organization using prospects and young controllable talent — a much healthier and sustainable way to roster build versus Dave Dombrowski’s wild free-agent spending and blockbuster trades.
Logically, Bloom’s method takes time, and early signs would indicate that the organization is going in the right direction. Many of his top prospects are either reaching the big leagues or climbing up the final rungs of the minor leagues.
The Red Sox will enter this offseason with a reset luxury tax, a loaded farm system and the ability to make some serious additions to the roster.
Bloom deserves a chance to blend the Red Sox’s deep pockets with the Rays’ ability to find diamonds in the rough and develop prospects at an impressive clip. He’ll have that opportunity this season assuming he’s not replaced.
While it has felt like Bloom will get another shot in 2024, there has been enough reporting to believe that the Red Sox are mulling over a change in leadership.
