Chiefs To Review Patrick Mahomes’ Contract After Other Quarterback Deals

While Aaron Rodgers surpassed the $50 million-per-year mark in 2022, the Packers quarterback signed an interestingly constructed contract that added three years to his prior agreement. Jalen Hurts’ $51MM-AAV agreement was a legitimate long-term deal in this price bracket, putting another quarterback ahead of Patrick Mahomes.

In 2020, the Chiefs and Mahomes worked on his outlier contract, and the two parties agreed to a 10-year extension for $450MM. Mahomes’ AAV was $10MM more than the NFL’s second-highest average pay at the time. The field quickly caught up with the great passer. Hurts’ contract drops Mahomes to sixth in QB AAV, and the Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert extensions almost certainly push the two-time MVP out of the top five.

“We have a special relationship with [Mahomes] and his agent. We’re in constant communication,” Veach said. “It’s one of those things — and I think coach [Andy Reid] hinted on this in his last press conference — where as soon as one guy gets done, it’s kind of the blueprint and the model. And a few years later, it’s jumped and exceeded.

“But I think that this organization and the relationship we have with Pat will always be working to make sure that we’re doing right by everybody. There will be a couple more contracts that still have to get done — Burrow and Herbert — and once they do, I think you kind of look at everything and assess where you are and what you can do and take it from there.”

It would be uncommon for a club to renegotiate with a player who has this many years left on his deal, and the Chiefs have made no commitment to do so. However, the franchise’s previous Super Bowl appearance before Mahomes happened in 1969. The franchise should not be expected to engage in contract negotiations with the three-time Super Bowl MVP. Brett Veach indicated on Thursday that the organization will reevaluate its quarterback situation after the Bengals and Chargers locked up their quarterback.

The two-time Super Bowl MVP outperforms his rivals in terms of accomplishments and is under contract until 2031. No other quarterback’s contract extends beyond 2028; passers who have been extended after Mahomes’ contract have rightfully picked traditional arrangements to maximize leverage while still in their primes. Mahomes, 27, has made no reported effort for a raise, and his contract does include guarantee procedures that lock up salary a year in advance, which safeguard him. However, as the market continues to rise, Mahomes’ contract will be exceeded by guys who have accomplished significantly less.

The six-year pro missed much of the 2022 playoffs due to a high ankle sprain, which he aggravated many times. While Mahomes does not appear to be in danger of losing offseason time, he stated this week (via NFL.com’s James Palmer) that the ankle is not totally healed. Mahomes, who had toe surgery in 2021 and missed training that offseason, said the edema has resolved and he is good with independent offseason activities. Nonetheless, Mahomes stated (through Palmer) that he does not anticipate to be limited during OTAs. Mahomes has not missed a full game due to injury since 2019.
