Ex-Player Working For Dave Dombrowski Emerging As Candidate To Replace Chaim Bloom

The Boston Red Sox have struggled to put together any stretch of continued success in recent years, largely due to the massive philosophical changes made to their front office every four years.

After going from one of the most aggressive leaders to one of the least, Boston reportedly has interest in a general manager who likely would successfully bridge the gap between both strategies.

“Philadelphia Phillies general manager Sam Fuld has emerged as one of the leading candidates to fill (former chief baseball officer) Chaim Bloom’s vacancy in Boston,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote Sunday.

Fuld currently works under Dave Dombrowski — Bloom’s predecessor who won a ring but at the expense of the organization’s future. Fuld, however, is an analytic-driven executive and former player. His current role has been to be the middleman between the clubhouse and analytics.

Fuld appears to have some resemblance to Bloom as far as his own views go but has worked under Dombrowski and seen that building a World Series-caliber roster involves some risk — something Bloom was far too hesitant to consider.

The 41-year-old executive is under contract through 2025 but could leave for Boston with the Phillies’ permission. Typically, an organization will grant those wishes if the position the opposing club is inquiring about is a promotion. A lateral move is much more likely to get denied but that is not the case.

Assuming Fuld is granted permission to speak to the Red Sox, he’d be a favorite to land the job. Prior to joining the Phillies, Fold interviewed for a managerial role in Boston and the Red Sox’s ownership group reportedly was impressed. Now he’s on the radar once again.
