The Boston Red Sox are expected to be one of many clubs that will inquire about Los Angeles Angels two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani when the superstar reaches free agency in November.

The 29-year-old will be ready for Opening Day after having surgery on his elbow on Tuesday. He’ll be a designated hitter for 2024 but plans to continue to be a two-way player in 2025.

Ohtani hit .304 with 78 extra-base hits including 44 home runs, 95 RBIs and a 1.066 OPS in 135 games.

As a pitcher, he posted a 10-5 record with a 3.14 ERA, 167-to-55 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .184 batting average against and a 1.061 WHIP in 132 innings across 23 starts.

Ohtani’s injury will impact his value but there’s no doubt he’ll still be regarded as the top free agent on the market. Boston will be among the many interested but according to one sportsbook, doesn’t have great odds of obtaining the top player in the game.

The Red Sox have +2800 odds (3.6%) to sign Ohtani this winter according to BetOnline’s Sportsbook. Boston is ranked as the No. 14-most likely team to acquire Ohtani.

The Red Sox recently fired chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom and their ownership group showed a sense of urgency in the post-firing press conference.

If there is any narrative that Boston could land Ohtani, it starts with the idea that they are sick of sitting in last place and will once again start to spend as freely as the other top markets in Major League Baseball.
