Red Sox Reportedly Have Strong Odds To Land Ex-Yankees Slugger This Winter

on

The Boston Red Sox fell short of the postseason with a roster that just did not have enough depth to sustain injuries.

While adding firepower to the pitching staff will be the overwhelming priority, additions all around the diamond are likely.

Boston has been linked to utility man Gio Urshela — who currently is on the Los Angeles Angels but had his peak years with the New York Yankees.

Boston has been given +650 odds (13.3%) to land Urshela in free agency this winter by Bet California. It should be noted that the site makes hypothetical odds based on their analysis of where these players will land.

You cannot actually bet on these odds. The 31-year-old infielder has been decent this year with the Angels, batting .299 with nine extra-base hits including two home runs, 24 RBIs and a .703 OPS in 62 games. His 91 OPS+ is a tick below his career 102 OPS+ — making him a league-average offensive contributor.

Urshela spent 37 games at third base, 22 games at first base, nine at shortstop and one at second base. He’s a typical utility infielder, though that job could be awarded to a young prospect aiming to get his foot in the door next season, such as Ceddanne Rafaela.

Urshela might not be the only Angel switching coasts this offseason, as it was reported that Mike Trout could receive a green light to request a trade.
